Why Tango?

Here are a few reasons why you might want to start or restart dancing tango...from a tango addict!

Why Tango?

-Think of one dance that does not require memorized steps....nothing comes to mind? I give you a hint: TANGO

- Tango gives you an universal language to connect  with anyone in the world who shares the same “tango culture”. No language/origin/education/social barriers.

-Every dance can be different depending on your mood. It can be anything .Sensual or silly or both!

-It is a mild aerobic exercise, with minimum stress in joints.

-It brings out your inner artist, musician, and dancer. All at the same time, as you struggle to

visualize music with your body and feet.

-It redefines roles by learning mutual respect

DISCLAIMER:

Attention!: this is a strictly improvised, highly addicting activity.

Once you experience that you are actually enjoying a “body jamming session”  with  your partner , you will start to realize why tango today is a global language , a dance/music genre spread in every country.

Reasons to like -or dislike-  tango music.

-The poetry combined with this moody music will catch your ear at the first notes.

-Magically you will be transported to a lost era. Huge dancing halls, packed with swivelling elegant couples.

-The tango music itself is arranged to act as a remedy to your soul. It's stress relieving and makes your thoughts to slow down a click.

-All the tunes (specially the instrumental tangos) sound different each time you listen to them as they unfold their hidden richness . First time was  definitely a sharp happy – almost aggressive- tune, second hearing you get a scratch  of  sorrow hidden under the thorns of rhythm, and third time listening to it , it can be life changing experience, where you cannot bear listening to other music than that.

-When it comes to lyrics, as Christine Denniston puts it: “ the level of artistry in tango lyrics is truly high. Talented poets discovered more than a handful of ways to express desire and pain in a way that the audiences receive a form of purification through the experience.”

So it happens sometimes when you listen tango music. Not to be sure what you want to do. Dance or drink.

-For sure this is not a proper background music for house chores! Not recommended! You will end up dancing alone and let everything undone.

-Not a proper music for enjoying your coffee, lunch or chatting with friends (unless you are in an actual milonga -tango dancing night).

You will end up -again- dancing alone ,or with a friend or with the poor waiter.

-Listening to tango music is like falling in love. Butterflies in the stomach, raised heartbeats, subtle smiling and an empty embrace that need another.

So what is Tango?

In a nutshell , tango is  a Social Urban Dance, which does not obey any rules of choreographed steps. It relies on improvisation and interaction with music. Two tango dancing bodies are by definition two dynamic forces combined in a way ephemeral and unique.

The artistic perception, the aesthetic criterion of two people , associates with their behavioural element.

And all this is happening on a dance floor full of other people. Different people, that they all try the same thing.

To coexist. To attract . To be consumed. To claim and to lose.

Who Is Speaking?

My name is Dimitris. I am a Tango dancer, teacher and more. I give tango classes and workshops together with my beautiful wife Frini.

Since our first tango embrace in 2001, after almost 20 years of dancing and commitment to spreading our love to people, this could be our distilled quote: Technique cultivates the way of doing things. As we study, the technique bring us to the essence of tango which is respect for the other. In the end of the day we teach what we dance. We dance what we teach.
