What To Do This Summer?

In summer there are plenty of activities to chose from. There is a music festival almost every week in Chania or around. But what else is there if you want to have a relaxing experience away from the masses of tourists that invade the island every season? I put together a few activities happening this month that you might be interested in.  In full disclosure, it is all activities organised by our contributors to the newsletter. Puppet Theatre Workshop (23 July) A workshop full of fun and laughter for kids and adults. We will: - design and create theatre puppets -learn how to use them -play with them We will use a variety of materials and our imagination to bring those puppets to life. Click here to see the details of this activity. Summer Rooftop Sound Journeys (23 July) This summer, you’re invited to a unique sound therapy experience under the Cretan stars. Imagine yourself lying comfortably on a large open rooftop under the stars and the Milky Way, with breath taking views of t...

What You Did Not Know About The Orthodox Easter

No matter to which religious tradition you swear allegiance, if you live in Crete, you might have noticed a profound truth: for Orthodox Christians Easter is the thing . No other celebration around the year gets so much attention, so much energy and involves so much food as Easter. Coming after 6 weeks of strict fasting…you would say the food and the partying are to be expected…However, there is more to it than meets the eye. Easter is not only Easter Sunday but it includes the week before…the Holy Week or…the Week of Passions as we call it in Romania. During this week, each step of Jesus is being carefully accounted for in rituals that add to each other to recreate the energy of an event that happened more than 2000 years ago…2023 to be more precise! Looking back at my own upbringing, in an essentially orthodox society, Easter was as much a religious celebration as a social happening. It was the time when us kids were allowed to linger on the streets until late at night as...

On Finding The Recipe Of Happiness And What Conscious Crete Is All About

I have been involved with this community for around 9 months now…just enough time to give birth if this was a baby. A project like Conscious Crete is in many ways very much like having a baby: the intensity of it, the novelty, the not really knowing what to do. The only difference (or maybe not really the only one!) is that when you have a baby there are only two possible answers to the question what is it? A boy? Or a girl? I wish the answer to what Conscious Crete is all about was as simple and binary as the one above. It is not…yet I will try to bring some light into the matter. Conscious Crete is more than a Facebook Group There is no doubt in my mind that Conscious Crete is much bigger a project than a Facebook Group. Yet, for many people this statement is not clear as they tend to see only the tip of the iceberg. The Facebook Group is a very useful platform to gather likeminded people and keep them informed of the activities of the community and not a purpose in...

What Can The Conscious Crete Community Do For You?

Is This Really A Community? The essence of community is best depicted by the Tibetan symbol for thunderbolt in the picture below. In this image, each figure holds the left hand up, in an attitude of receiving and the right hand down, in an attitude of giving. All the individuals taking part in the circle make an unique contribution to create a unified and vital whole, a whole greater that each individual itself.         For me this is the essence of community. Putting together our skills and energy in order to create a greater whole that can be beneficial to all of us. In my past life as an international negotiator we spoke about making the pie bigger in order to be able to share it with everyone around the table. Community is not only about giving as it is not only about receiving either. It is really about this balance between giving and receiving.   My proposal to you is that we keep creating TOGETHER this vibrant community.   ...
