Hi everyone! My name is Helen and I love exploring Crete, the mountains and the trails.  I am excited to share with you some of my favourite routes 🙂 Gorgeous Gouverneto Just 18km from Chania (about 30min drive) you will find the Gouverneto monastery.  Built in 1537 in the Venetian period, it is one of the oldest monasteries in Crete. Upon arrival your first walk will be through the beautiful gardens of the monastery before reaching the top of Avlaki gorge.  From here there is a stone path that takes you down to the bottom of the gorge.  On the way down you will pass the famous “bear” cave, the church of St.John the hermit and the ruins of the old Katholiki monastery.  Once you reach the bottom it is a short hike to the small cove at the end of the gorge which used to be a harbour back in the day.  Here you can take a refreshing dip in the crystal blue waters before tackling the walk back up.   I have been involved with this community for around 9 months now…just enough time to give birth if this was a baby. A project like Conscious Crete is in many ways very much like having a baby: the intensity of it, the novelty, the not really knowing what to do. The only difference (or maybe not really the only one!) is that when you have a baby there are only two possible answers to the question what is it? A boy? Or a girl? I wish the answer to what Conscious Crete is all about was as simple and binary as the one above. It is not…yet I will try to bring some light into the matter.   This month I have picked out a very short talk (only 3 minutes) by a modern Indian mystic OSHO .  I am coming more and more to the realization that if you can say what you want in a few words then there is usually a lot of truth in it. Our minds are so busy reliving the past or anticipating the future to the point that between these two extremes we miss the journey of life itself because life is always happening HERE and  NOW. We are going through life in such a hurry that we never  allow ourselves the rest to sit back and enjoy the ride with the beauty that is presenting to us at every moment. Or to put it in other words, life with all its possibilities is constantly knocking on our door but we are never there. In my own life, I try as much as possible to stay in the present moment. Food brings us together is a mantra I always believed in; we gather around the table and share food, conversations, jokes, emotions and some of our troubles.  By the end of a shared meal we feel  fulfilled both physically and emotionally.  This week recipe is a very simple and delicious cake, you don't need an electric mixer, a hand held one will do the job nicely      Lemon Cake 4 large eggs at room temperature  200 grams sugar 200 mil olive oil  200 grams strained yogurt  Zest of one lemon Juice of one lemon 280 grams all purpose flour One table spoon baking powder One packet of vanilla    In a large bowl mix all the ingredients, except the flour and baking powder, until well combined. Add the baking powder to the flour, stir with a fork to be combined.
